A construction project is not one phase, and its phases do not need the same machine. The most expensive mistake in equipment rental is hiring one machine for the whole project, then discovering it does not suit half the work – so it stands idle on site while a second machine is hired alongside it.
Early on – excavation, foundations, concrete frame – demand is for heavy lifting: cranes for formwork, rebar and precast elements; excavators and wheel loaders for digging and moving fill. By the finishing and facade stage demand shifts entirely to personnel lifts: man lifts for external elevations, scissor lifts for interior work.
Picking the right machine starts from three numbers: the maximum working height required, the heaviest single lift, and the surface the machine has to travel on.

How to choose the right height
The practical rule: take the height of the highest work point, then add roughly two metres. Platform height is not working height – a person on the platform reaches about two metres above it, but guardrails and standing position consume part of that margin.
Oversizing costs too. A larger machine means more weight, more room to manoeuvre and a higher daily rate for no benefit. If your highest work is at 9 m, a 12 m machine is enough – there is no reason to hire 18 m.
The ground decides the machine before the height does
An electric scissor lift is built for hard, level floors – poured concrete or tiling. Running one over uncompacted fill or loose sand is a safety question, not an efficiency one.
On sites still at frame stage, where the ground is fill or rough concrete, a man lift or a telehandler on rough-terrain tyres is the workable choice. State the ground conditions when you request a quote: they change the recommendation more than the height does.
Daily or monthly hire?
Daily hire makes sense for short, defined jobs – fitting a sign, lifting an AC unit, limited maintenance. On construction projects the work usually runs for weeks, and accumulated days make weekly or monthly hire cheaper per unit of time.
The factor most often missed is transport: every delivery and collection cycle has a cost, so hiring for two days, returning the machine and hiring it again a week later costs more than keeping it. Fix your work schedule before requesting a quote so the pricing matches the real duration.

A crane lifts heavy loads vertically to significant heights and is stationary while lifting. A telehandler is a mobile machine with a telescopic boom that carries lighter loads but moves them horizontally around the site and places them on mid-level floors. On larger projects both are used together rather than as substitutes.
Do I need an operator, or can my own team run the machine?
It depends on the machine. Cranes and excavators require a qualified operator, while scissor lifts and man lifts can be run by a technician trained on them. Say which you need when requesting a quote so the price includes an operator if required.
